Location: Blue Sage Ranch is located about 10 miles north of Craig and runs east and west in multiple large blocks.

Terrain and Access: Elevations vary from 6,600 to 7,100 ft. The ranch is located in the rolling sagebrush hills that are the lower slopes of the Elkhead Mountains. Upper slopes have some pinyon juniper cover. Ranch roads provide adequate access to main parts of the ranch. These roads can become very muddy during wet weather. Hunters should be equipped with 4-wheel drive vehicle.

There are no antler-point restrictions for any of the ranches. No over-the-counter licenses are offered on these properties. Ranching for Wildlife licenses are open to Colorado residents only. Licenses are only for the season and ranch on the license. For more information on season dates and application deadlines, see the Big Game Hunting Brochure.

Ranch rules from previous seasons are provided for a general perspective. Ranch rules are negotiated annually and some rule changes may take affect this year.

BLUE SAGE RANCH
Hunting Rules

  1. Please be aware of the image you project while hunting on the Blue Sage Ranch, as Elkhorn Outfitters, Inc. adheres to all game and firearm laws that pertain to your hunt. All violations will be handled according to the letter of the law. Any violation will result in forfeiture of your hunt.
  2. Elkhorn Outfitters, Inc. office location is 37399 N. HWY. 13 Craig, Co. 81625. All public hunters are required to check in at Elkhorn Outfitters,lnc. the first day and follow up with check out at the end, and to report harvest success. Forms will be provided for checkout. It is very important to check out after your hunt for your safety and that of others hunting on the ranch.
  3. Public Check In and Check Out times for antelope, deer and elk season are 7:00 AM and 7:00 PM at the Elkhorn Outfitters, Inc. office location. All times begin the night before designated seasons begin, continuing thru to the evening of the last day of season.
  4. There will be no off highway vehicle use for hunting on the Blue Sage Ranch. Access is by foot or horseback on the Blue Sage Ranch, Lambing grounds, Pilot knob, and Pondella properties. Parking is permitted in designated areas only. All OHV use is limited to designated roads only and permission must be granted/verified for use on the Ranch at time of check in.
  5. Public hunters will be allowed on the entire property with the following exceptions. Areas around dwellings and livestock handling facility will be closed for the safety of people and livestock. Pasture areas and other areas where livestock are concentrated may be closed. Hunters will be notified of these closures at time of check in.
  6. There will be NO access allowed for scouting. Maps will be provided as general references and are not considered a source of navigation. For further information, please refer to BLM maps of the region. Trespassing will not be tolerated.
  7. Possible wounded animals that cannot be recovered will not count as animals harvested. Please advise the agents of Blue Sage Ranch and Elkhorn Outfitters, Inc. if such an incident occurs.
  8. One rifle per license is allowed on ranch. No party hunting allowed.
  9. One non-hunter only will be allowed to accompany each licensed hunter, and they may use only one vehicle for hunting.
  10. No camping on the ranch except in the designated Blue Sage camping area.
  11. No fires are allowed on the ranch at anytime except in our designated camping area with exceptions to County Enforced Fire Bans/ Restrictions.
  12. PACK YOUR TRASH out with you.  No littering; including but not limited to trash, hides, and bones.  All items must be disposed of properly.  Moffat County provides free dumpster service at several locations and there are numerous hide barrels you can drop your hide off at.
  13. All rifles must be sighted in prior to entering hunting property. There is a 100 rifle range at Elkhorn Outfitters you can use to site in your rifle if needed. No casual shooting permitted.
  14. All hunters will be required to sign a release of liability form at time of check in. A copy of the form will also serve as a permit to access the property and will be kept in the possession of the hunter at all times while hunting on the property. The document must be produced when requested by an officer or ranch agent.
  15. Please respect our livestock and roads. Maximum speed on the ranch at all time is 15 MPH.
  16. No consumption of alcohol or drugs while hunting.
  17. Hunters will be required to leave all gates and fences as they originally found them.
  18. The above rules plus any additional information deemed appropriate by the Ranch and Colorado Division of Wildlife will be sent to all public hunters successful in the draw. Any violation of these rules and/or state statutes of regulations will mean revocation of hunting privileges on the Blue Sage Ranch.

Hunter Education Safety Course

Anyone born on or after January 1, 1949 must have completed an approved Hunters Education Course or Bow Hunter Education Course (for archery license only) sanctioned by a state or province before applying for or purchasing a license over the counter at a licensed agency. Colorado honors hunter education (safety) course from other states and provinces. Photo copies of certifications or cards are not acceptable. You must carry the original education certifications when hunting and produce it when requested by an officer.

Fluorescent Orange

You must wear at least 500 square inches of solid daylight fluorescent orange material in an outer garment above the waist. Part of the fluorescent orange must be worn as a hat/head covering visible from all directions while hunting deer, elk, antelope or bear during muzzle loading or rifle season. Camouflage orange does not meet this requirement. Mesh garments are not recommended.

Be an Ethical Hunter

  • A responsible hunter is a responsible citizen who presents a positive image.
  • Always watch your image. Do not give hunters a bad name.
  • Do not display your game in a distasteful manner.
  • Follow the rules of safe gun handling.
  • Know and obey the laws.
  • Be involved in wildlife management.
  • Respect the wildlife you hunt.
  • Respect the wildlife species you do not hunt.
  • Respect other hunters’ rights and the rights of non-hunters and land owners.
  • Have respect for the land and all our natural resources.
  • Develop your skills and knowledge and share them with new and upcoming hunters.
  • Follow up on ALL shots taken.
  • Be a good sportsman and conservationist.
  • Hunting is not a competitive sport. There are no winners or losers.
  • Relax and enjoy your hunt whether you are successful or not.
  • The future of hunting depends on you.

The Blue Sage Ranch and Elkhorn Outfitters, Inc. are here to help you as a hunter, have an enjoyable and successful hunt. Our Rules and Regulations are not intended to limit your hunt but to make sure you as a hunter are safe while having the opportunity to enjoy the outdoors with a memorable hunt for years to come. We want your hunting trip to be an experience that is meaningful and rewarding to the tradition that we all enjoy as well. Motels are located in Craig. There is a KOA Campground in Craig.

Hunter is responsible for retrieval of game.
